The Idiot. The Return

Fyodor Dostoyevsky
A phantasmagoria in three acts
Director: Grigory Kozlov
Prince Myshkin returns from Switzerland to St. Petersburg and immediately finds himself in the center of a growing tragic scandal. Everyone he meets is inexorably tied to Nastasya Filippovna, a captivating woman with a broken destiny...
The Masterskaya adapted the first part of F. M. Dostoyevsky’s great novel in painstaking detail with hardly any omissions. But while in Dostoyevsky’s novel Prince Myshkin’s first day in St. Petersburg is just the starting point of future tragic events, Grigory Kozlov’s production is a complete story in which all of the plot lines converge and reach their logical - and tragic - conclusion.
“There is nothing like their honesty and authenticity on the Petersburg stage today.”
– Petersburg Theatre Journal
“The show charmed, fascinated, captivated...”
– Evgeniya Tropp, Petersburg Theatre Journal
The show stands apart for its subtle psychology, painstakingly assembled plot and vibrant acting. Of particular interest is the theatre’s take on Myshkin - a man free from idealisation, but who carries in himself an inner light that can be sensed physically. This light illuminates all those who come into contact with him, bringing out from them completely unexpected qualities.
Prince Myshkin is played in turn by three actors. Each actor brings something unique to the role, a trait of his acting and personal individuality, but without deviating from the main plot line of the show. In 2010 all three actors who play Myshkin were given the V. I. Strzhelchik Independent Acting Award.
